Living with rheumatoid arthritis can impact a person’s social and romantic life as well as alter their physical abilities.

According to the study in the “Oxford Journals,” about one-third of the patients surveyed said rheumatoid arthritis put a strain on their relationship with their partner. Some of the reasons for this strain included the patient’s struggle with daily activities as well as not being able to engage in social activities.

Patients said these issues can lead to emotional and financial stress.

More than half of the patients surveyed said their rheumatoid arthritis affected their sex lives. The patients said pain and fatigue put limitations on their level of intimacy.

Arthritis can also impact a patient’s relationship with his or her friends and family.

People with arthritis may not be able to go out with friends as often, or engage in activities that might be too physical, like even going to the mall or working out.

Rheumatoid arthritis patients might also struggle to stand on the sidelines at their child’s game, or be able to play in the yard or participate in other more physical games with their children.

According to Arthritis Self-Management, families who are struggling with arthritis should work on their communication. The site says it’s important for family members to be able to voice concern and frustration to work through some of the emotional issues associated with arthritis.

When working on family issues is too hard to do on their own, some families may need to seek out professional help to try to work through the issues at home and try to find some solutions.

Peggy Henning remembers the day her family welcomed Daisy and Duke into their family like it was yesterday.

"They immediately just became part of the family," said Henning. "They were very friendly with all the guests we had coming over."

But things changed when Daisy and Duke got loose. They liked chasing cats.

"Dogs are pack animals and that is their default instinct," said Henning. "If they are bonded or litter mates, it intensifies that. They would get out of the confines of our house or yard and this instinct would come to the surface."
