Alys Martinez is a general assignment reporter for KEYT NewsChannel 3 and is elated to call Santa Barbara home.
Alys grew up in Long Beach and received a degree in Spanish at UCSB. She put her degree to good use, moved back to Long Beach and taught third-grade in a bilingual classroom and Adult Education.
Although she loved teaching, Alys decided to pursue a career in journalism. She moved back to Santa Barbara in 2005 and was hired as an Assignment Editor at KEYT-3. Within 2 years, Alys moved up the ranks and became News Operations Manager and Producer.
With this experience, she was hired at KABC-TV in Los Angeles as a writer and editor. She spent nearly four years there writing about everything from the Super Bowl, to the earthquake in Haiti. She has also worked as a writer and editor at KTLA-5 in Los Angeles.
But, Santa Barbara was always calling her home. After marrying and becoming a mom, Alys decided to raise her son in the most beautiful city in the world. In 2012, she accepted a job at KEYT NewsChannel 3 as the weekend producer and also began reporting. Her story about a cat that traveled more than 1,000 miles stuck in a car engine, went viral and was featured on ABC World News Now.
When Alys isn't working, the single-mother spends time with her son Patrick, who is the love of her life. She is also an avid outdoorswoman. She enjoys hiking and has scaled Mount Whitney. Alys has also competed in several marathons, triathlons and adventure races.
