Researchers said the legendary Bhut Jolokia Ghost Pepper has been unseated as the hottest pepper in the world by a chile with an equally fearsome name: the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion.

New Mexico State University's Chile Pepper Institute said the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion pepper hit a spicy rating of 2,009,231 Scoville Heat Units, compared to runner up, the Chocolate 7-Pot at 1,853,936. The Bhut Jolokia was bumped down to third place with a scant 1,578,548 SHU, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported.

According to the publication, the heated announcement was made by the Chile Pepper Institute at the New Mexico Chile Conference in Las Cruces.

"We want to go for the Guinness now," Gregory Reeves, a graduate research student at the institute, told the newspaper.
