French Hospital Medical Center Earns Esteemed Accreditation by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer
SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA- January 28, 2014 – French Hospital Medical Center (FHMC), a Dignity Health member which also includes Arroyo Grande Community Hospital and Marian Regional Medical Center, is proud to announce full accreditation of their cancer care program by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) as a Community Cancer Center.
FHMC cancer care services received a three-year accreditation approval and eight commendations for exceptional performance. The recent accreditation acknowledges FHMC as a provider of a full range of diagnostic and treatment services to cancer patients and their families. Rehabilitation, support, resources and cancer-related clinical research are among the services offered.
“We provide our patients with a high quality, community cancer program,” says Dr. Eddie Hayashi, M.D. and French Hospital Medical Center Cancer Committee Chairman. “We are honored that our program has been recognized in this capacity. This accreditation speaks to the dedication of our physicians, nurses and health care staff and our collaborative approach to cancer care.”
The accreditation is based on a rigorous evaluation process which reviews the cancer program’s performance as it relates to cancer prevention, early diagnosis, pretreatment evaluation, staging, optimal treatment rehabilitation, end-of-life care and a host of other important facets of a cancer program. Information about new treatment options and ongoing follow up are among the measured criteria. In order to receive and maintain this designation, applicants must offer advanced, comprehensive care using the latest technology and an organized approach to treatment.
Additionally, the cancer care program at FHMC will be further enhanced by the CoC’s ongoing analysis and measures of the program. The designation will provide national recognition and public awareness of the high-quality cancer care provided by FHMC and the Hearst Cancer Resource Center. It will also allow access to resource tools that will allow the Medical Center to measure their level of care against nationally recognized standards of care.
Established in 1922 by the American College of Surgeons, the CoC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education and the monitoring of comprehensive, quality care.
