Wouldn't it be great if you could eat whatever you wanted and just exercised a little more later?
Unfortunately, it doesn't always work out that way. Still, a recent Texas Christian University study of 300 adults found that learning how much more you'd need to exercise to work off certain foods was enough to make people pick a lower-calorie meal.
Take a look at what it would take to work off some of our favorite high-calorie indulgences.
Chick Fil-A Waffle Fries. Chick Fil-A's delicious waffle fries have 390 calories in each medium-size serving. That equals 90 minutes of sweaty Power Yoga.
Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream. Ben & Jerry's Phish Food premium ice cream packs 280 calories into each 1/2-cup serving. That's a little more than an hour's worth of pumping iron. But who stops at a single serving? Eat the whole pint and do about five hours of weight lifting (or almost two hours of bare-handed rock climbing).
Auntie Anne's Pretzel. These pretzels are delicious—and pack about 340 calories each. And that's without the dipping sauces. Pull on your swimsuit for an hour of laps (add 20 minutes if you are a cheese dipper).
McDonalds Big Mac Meal. The Big Mac alone is 550 calories—the "sweat equivalent" of running 5 miles, or about 25 laps around a standard football field. Order the whole extra value meal? That will cost you 63 laps.
Lay's Classic Potato Chips. One 1.5-ounce snack bag of Lay's Original Potato Chips has 240 calories, which will take about half an hour on a rowing machine to burn off.
7-Eleven Slurpees. A Coke-flavored Slurpee from 7-Eleven has 130 calories in a 16-ounce serving. That seems like a bargain until you realize you need to do 20 minutes of intense pilates in order to work it off.
Outback Steakhouse Bloomin' Onion. A Bloomin' Onion from Outback Steakhouse is intended to be shared among six diners, but plenty of people simply split one with a friend. A single serving has 1,959 calories, so your half will cost you two hours of fast paced Zumba.
Oreo Cookies. A six-cookie snack pack of Oreos is 270 calories, or about 3 1/2 miles of walking.
Cinnabon Cinnamon Roll. A classic Cinnabon roll has a whopping 880 calories. To work it off, you'll need to do about 4,125 push ups (which will take you about 2 3/4 hours).
Snickers. A single Snickers candy bar has 250 calories. You burn that much by doing sit-ups or crunches for about an hour without stopping. Get psyched to crank out about 3,000.
