Drink lots of green tea
Green tea is known for its cancer-fighting benefits, but it can also help boost your metabolism too thanks to catechins, which increase levels of the metabolism-speeding brain chemical norepinephrine.
Eat your iron
If you're low on iron, your body can't get enough oxygen to your cells, which slows down your metabolism, says nutritionst Samantha Heller. Multivitamins are a good choice, and so are three to four daily servings of foods rich in iron like lean red meat and chicken.
Kickstart your workout
Add bursts of high-intensity moves into your workout through interval training as a surefire way to boost your metabolism. Add a 30-second sprint every five minutes of your run, or run at an incline for five minutes on the treadmill.
Challenge yourself with a new sport
The more you do a certain workout, the more your body is going to adjust and the fewer calories you're going to burn. Consider trying a new sport through cross-training to rev up your metabolic after-burn.
Check your thyroid levels
A sluggish metabolism may be a sign of an underactive thyroid, which afflicts about 25 percent of American women, although most don't know they have it. Hyperthyroidism can be detected with a blood test, and treated with medication.
Water, water and more water
According to a German study, drinking about two glasses of water within a certain time frame ups your metabolism by about 30 percent.
Pump some iron
It's well known that muscle burns more calories than fat, but weight training also increases your resting metabolic rate, which is the number of calories you burn while sitting.
Lay off the booze
Wash your dinner down with water, not wine. Alcohol has been shown to slow your metabolism by depressing the central nervous system.
Eat more dairy
A study published in the journal Obesity found that women who ate three to four servings of low-fat dairy products each day lost 70 percent more fat than those who didn't eat as much cheese and yogurt. Calcium appears to act as a switch, telling your body to burn excess fat faster.
Eating fish regularly is linked to lower levels of the hormone leptin, which can cause low metabolism and obesity. Try to eat three to four servings of fatty fish like salmon, tuna or mackerel each week.
