Which items should you buy in October, and which sales should you keep waiting for? Take a look at DealNews.com's list of good and bad October buys to help you find this month's best deals.
First, here are the items you should plan to snatch up.
Halloween costumes: While you'll undoubtedly find the best sales in November, by then it will be an entire year before you get to wear that Halloween costume. Buy costumes the week before Halloween for the biggest October price cuts, and be sure to look for both sales and coupons.
Denim: This is the time of year that stores are trying to get rid of the jeans they didn't sell during back-to-school season. (Black Friday is also a good time to buy jeans, though.)
Cars: New models usually come out in September, so at this point, dealers tend to offer deals to get older models off their lots.
Camping gear: October is a great time for deals on things like tents, hiking gear and other end-of-season camping equipment. DealNews does caution that similar sales may be available in November, but are more frequent in October and come with less strings attached.
Patio furniture: With retailers desperately seeking to clear out their inventory, there can be plenty of good deals found if you want to stock up on some new additions to your patio, even if you won't get a chance to use it right away.
European vacations: October can be a good time to book European travel because this month is the start of the continent's off-season. As a result, travelers can expect cheaper rooms, fewer lines and less crowds.
Here's what DealNews suggests you should wait to buy.
Cold weather wear: You'll find the best deals on cold weather clothes and accessories in January. If you absolutely need something before then, try to wait until Black Friday sales.
Big appliances: While it's true that new models of washers, dryers, fridges and other appliances tend to hit stores in September and October, manufacturers don't usually offer many discounts until November.
Laptops and general electronics: Eying a new laptop, camera, tablet or perhaps some home theater gear? Wait for Black Friday, when you're much more likely to find better deals.
HDTVs: As usual, DealNews notes that the best time of the year, by far, to purchase a new HDTV is around Black Friday. However, this year that advice comes with an exception: 55-inch 1080p LCD HDTVs. DealNews says it noticed last last year that those sets didn't actually drop much in price, with retailers pretty much discounting them as much as they're willing to already. If you're in the market for something smaller, though, you're better off waiting till Thanksgiving time.
Most Apple devices: DealNews notes that last year saw Black Friday retailers offer sales on Apple products such as the MacBook Air, iPad, iPhone and iMac. This holiday season is expected to be more of the same, including potentially great deals on the 11-inch MacBook Air and the iPad Air 2.
Video games: With big titles like "Assassin's Creed Syndicate" and "Halo 5: Guardians" being released over the last two weeks of October this year, deals are going to be harder to come by. That should change in November, as DealNews points out that's when sales can be found on late-2015 video game releases.
