The victims aboard Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 came from around the world and held a wide range of hopes and dreams. Here are a few of those passengers' pictures and stories.
Parents Jeroen Wals and Nicole Martens were aboard Flight 17, along with their four children: 17-year-old Brett, 15-year-old Jinte (shown), 13-year-old Amel and 9-year old Solenn.

Three additional victims of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 were a family traveling home to the Philippines. Irene Gunawan (right), 54, and her children -- Sheryl Shania Gunawan (left), 15, and Darryl Dwight Gunawan (second from left), 20 -- were on a summer vacation.
Jacqueline van Tongere, a revered AIDS researcher, was on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 en route to the International AIDS Conference in Melbourne, Australia.
Dutch passenger Pim de Kuijer was on his way to the AIDS conference in Australia -- a trip that was to be followed by a backpacking excursion there, according to his Facebook page.
Quinn Lucas Schansman, 19, was a dual U.S.-Netherlands citizen. He was born in New York when his father worked at the Dutch embassy, his grandfather Ronald Schansman told CNN affiliate KYW. An avid rugby player, he was a student at the International Business School - Hogeschool van Amsterdam and was headed to Indonesia to vacation with his family.
Karlijn Keijzer, who was from Amsterdam, was also a doctoral student studying in Indiana University's chemistry department. She previously received her master's degree from Indiana University and was a champion rower at the school.
Nick Norris (not shown) and his three grandchildren, Otis (left), 8, Evie (center), 10 and Mo Maslin (right), 12, were all aboard Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. "The fact that he was with his grandchildren right to the end, caring for his family, is perhaps a way of looking at the strength that he brought to things," said Norris' nephew, Matt Jones.
Shazana Salleh (right) was one of 15 crew members onboard Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 when it crashed in Ukraine. All crew members on the flight were Malaysian nationals.
A 77-year-old teacher and Roman Catholic nun, Sister Philomene Tiernan was on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, according to Australia's Kincoppal - Rose Bay School of the Sacred Heart. The school principal described Tiernan as "wonderfully wise and compassionate."
Jane Adi Soetjipto, 73, was on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 returning home to Jakarta, Indonesia, after her annual visit to her mother in the Netherlands, nephew Joss Wibisono told CNN. Her mother is Indonesian, her father Dutch. "Last time I saw her was yesterday, when I waved goodbye to her," said Wibisono, an Indonesian journalist and author based in Amsterdam.
The World Health Organization confirmed to CNN that their employee Glenneth Thomas (left) was on board Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 and heading to the International AIDS Conference scheduled to begin this weekend in Melbourne, Australia. Friend Gina Manola said he was "a brave, curious person, adventurous. And a lot of people, I think, were drawn to him. He was a really wonderful person doing great work in the world," she said, adding that he was planning his 50th birthday celebration.

Ventura police are currently on scene of a double shooting that occurred in the 4200 block of Main Street just before 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Officers located two unidentified male victims suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene by medics. The other was taken to Ventura County Medical Center. His condition is unknown at this time.
