SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

More than 50 chihuahuas, saved from kill shelters, have been given new life thanks to a Santa Barbara County dog rescue.

Dog Adoption and Welfare Group (DAWG) took in chihuahuas from Lompoc, Santa Maria, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. All 52 will be heading east to states where small dogs are in high demand.

A group of volunteers and DAWG employees left Santa Barbara Wednesday morning headed for Montana and Colorado.

"They just don't have a lot of little dogs there," DWAG manager Angela Adan said.

Community donations have provided all the pups with coats, doggie boots, harnesses and leashes. DAWG also provided the animals with veterinary checks before sending them on the road.

The dogs will be brought to shelters in Montana and Colorado where DAWG employees say families will be quick to adopt them.

This is DAWG's third trip to other states to save California chihuahuas and other dogs from euthanasia. They hope to continue these lifesaving journey's and encourage donations to help them along the way.
