SANTA MARIA, Calif. -

Santa Maria police are looking for the driver who hit and seriously injured a 5-year-old with his or her car.

Just after 6 p.m. Thursday, the young boy was hit at the intersection of Cook and Russel streets.

Police said the boy ran out into the road and was hit by a car driving east on Cook.

The boy was airlifted to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with major injuries.

Sgt. Jesus Valle of Santa Maria Police Department said the vehicle had left by time officers arrived, and it could only be described by a witness as a small brown car similar to a Honda Civic.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Santa Maria Police Department at 805-928-3781.
