Estimated 2,000 Pounds of Pot Found, 14 Arrested in Ventura Drug Bust

Drug smuggling boat intercepted near Seacliff

VENTURA, Calif. -

14 people were arrested on Wednesday in connection with a smuggling boat at a Ventura County beach.

The boat was spotted by a Ventura County Sheriff's Deputy around 3 a.m. near Mobil Oil Pier between Seacliff and Mussel Shoals.

Deputies say a nearby motor home was filled with marijuana. Three of the suspects were arrested there, 6 more were arrested around 7:30 a.m. in La Conchita. Several more we arrested throughout the day in various areas.  In total, 14 men are now in custody in connection to the smuggling incident.  Of the 14 men arrested, one is a minor and half the group claim United States citizenship.  Authorities are estimating that the smugglers carried up to 2,000 pounds of pot on the boat.

The investigation is being handled by the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, and the case will be presented to the Ventura County District Attorney's Office for the filing of criminal charges.

ICE Homeland Security Investigators agents are continuing to investigate the case for possible federal violations

The California Highway Patrol briefly closed northbound lanes of Highway 101 to conduct the search. All lanes have since opened.
