SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

Retired Gen. Colin Powell stopped by Fess Parker's DoubleTree Resort in Santa Barbara early Friday morning.

Powell, who has held senior military and diplomatic positions under four U.S. presidents, was the keynote speaker for the 8th Annual Westmont President's Breakfast.

Powell told the crowd that he fell in love with Santa Barbara when he was President Ronald Reagan's national security adviser during the 1980s. He said Reagan always insisted on taking Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to the ranch for their meetings.

"And it was always on the president's list, at the very top. Santa Barbara, 'I want to take him to the ranch. I want to take him to this place and that place. Places that show what America is all about.'" said Powell.

The college honored Powell for his years of service to the nation and the world.
