Wind driven fire destroys homes near Fillmore

FILLMORE, Calif. -

A wind-driven fire near Fillmore is 100 percent contained as of 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, says a representative for the Ventura County Fire Department.

The fire burned more than 170 acres and damaged two homes on Monday.

At one point the flames were moving so quickly that more than 200 people in nearby homes had to be evacuated.  All evacuations were lifted at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The blaze began as a mobile home fire just after 3 p.m.,  then spread to the orchard. Fire officials are determining whether the fire started with the mobile home or if a downed line sparked the blaze.

More than 100 homes were threatened.

Firefighters set out containment lines to keep the fires from spreading. More than 400 personnel from various agencies are battling this fire from Ventura County Fire, LA County, Calfire, Fillmore City, Santa Barbara and SLO counties.

Strong gusty winds made for difficult conditions earlier Monday evening, but winds calmed down as the night progressed. Crews were working on the ground and with water dropping helicopters.

The fire was called the 'Goodenough incident,' because it started on the 1400 block of Goodenough Road.

Crews worked throughout the night and into the morning. No injuries have been reported.
