Smoke detectors are required by most insurance companies.  Not only can they save your life, but they can also save you a lot of money on insurance rates if your home catches fire.

Working smoke detectors are a requirement for most insurance policies.

"We would pay out, but there is and would be and will be a thorough investigation of why these requirements were not met or if there was any fraud involved," said Jane Macedo de Veer of State Farm Insurance.

Most policies also require a fire extinguisher and deadbolt locks on the doors.

Macedo de Veer said, "these are the three things that need to be in place to insure a property and we trust that happens."

So, if your home is hit by a fire or a burglar, not having detectors, extinguishers or deadbolts can make a bad situation worse.  Your insurance rates are almost certain to go up and it's even possible your policy would be cancelled.
