Plastic wraps on imported cars will still be seen, but plastic bags won't be used for trash at the deep sea Port of Hueneme.

This week, the Board of Harbor Commissioners passed a resolution encouraging state, county, municipal and district government agencies to ban noncompostable plastic bags.

Port Director Kristin Decas said most plastic litter degrades and pollutes the marine environment.

Plastic pollution mistaken for food can be toxic for marine life.

Under Decas' direction, the port has made environmentally friendly changes.

The port now has electric docks.  Rather than burning fuel, ships plug in while loading and unloading cars, bananas and other cargo.

The Port facilitates the transports more than $7 billion in cargo every year.
