MIAMI, Fla. -

The Coast Guard has suspended its search for a diver who disappeared on Sunday afternoon near Key Biscayne, Florida.

The missing diver has been identified as Jeffrey Vincent, 39, an airman stationed at Vandenberg Air Force Base. Coast Guard officials said Vincent went missing during an attempt to assist another diver. The current quickly pushed Vincent away from the boat and out of sight from the other members.

The search and rescue operation included an extensive 2,600 square nautical mile search for Vincent since he was reported missing to the Coast Guard Sector Miami at  12:18 p.m. on Sunday.

"The most challenging part of my job is having to suspend search efforts for missing persons at sea," said Capt. Chris Scraba, Coast Guard Sector Miami commander. "We would like to extend our sympathies to the families and friends affected by his disappearance."
