SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

Asian American students at UCSB and teens touring the campus said they like California's merit based admission policy.  Asian Americans make up more than a third of the students accepted by UC campuses.

So when a Latino state senator tried to stop the ban on race and ethnic admission policies they started a campaign against his bill.

Politicians said panel discussions to improve diversity will have to suffice.

California was the first state to drop affirmative action enrollment.  The U.S. Supreme court upheld a similar ban in Michigan this week.
