SANTA MARIA, Calif. -

Thousands of cyclists poured into Santa Maria Wednesday for the AIDS/LifeCycle ride. It's part of an effort to raise money for HIV/AIDS research and awareness

It’s a 7-day journey down the coast of California. The ride started in San Francisco and takes them 545 miles down the coast where the riders eventually end in Los Angeles.

Just under 3,000 cyclists are a part of this, including about 600 volunteers. Each has done their part to raise money for HIV-AIDS research and awareness. This year, they beat the previous record by raising $15-million.

"It’s a really amazing event," said Ryan Mckeel, with the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. "It’s a community coming together really supporting each other and united behind one cause. And that’s to end the HIV-AIDS epidemic."

The riders will be leaving Santa Maria very early tomorrow. They’ll have a shorter ride tomorrow, as they cruise into Lompoc to call it a day.
