Are Recent Earthquakes a Sign of Something More?

UC Santa Barbara scientists talk about if recent quakes are related and if they could be a sign of "The Big One."

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

Hundreds of sizable earthquakes have rattled worldwide in recent weeks. Tuesday's 8.2 magnitude quake in Chile and a 5.1 near Los Angeles during the final week of March have Californians wondering; what's up.

Could these quakes be related? Is "The Big One" on the way?

Scientists say no. But these recent shakers could be foreshocks to something more.

"There are several scientist that were expecting a very large earthquake and the fact that this 8.2 has happened has not reduced the possibility of even a larger earthquake happening," UC Santa Barbara research seismologist Craig Nicholson said.

While earthquakes are completely unpredictable, Nicholson says these most recent quakes are a good reminder for everyone to be prepared and have a plan for when an earthquake strikes.
