CARPINTERIA, Calif. -

A big rig truck loaded with strawberries crashed on the Southbound side of Highway 101, just North of Santa Claus Lane.

The crash happened about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when a car collided with the big rig.

California Highway Patrol reports the driver of the truck lost control and crashed into the guardrail.

The passenger in the big rig suffered major injuries and the driver of the big rig and car suffered minor injuries.

The situation got worse about 9:45 p.m., when a chain-reaction crash involving five cars in the same area slowed traffic again.

One of the drivers involved suffered major injuries.

It took five hours to up-right the big rig and the mess has now been cleaned up.

All lanes reopened this morning.
