Black bear tranquilized at Morro rock

Nearby school placed on lock down

MORRO BAY, Calif. -

A black bear was spotted near Morro Bay Rock Thursday.

A passerby reported the sighting at 6:30 a.m. to State Park officials.

Morro Bay High School,  about a half-mile away, was placed on lock down for about an hour.

Department of Fish and Wildlife tranquilized the bear at 11:30 a.m. once they arrived on scene.

Officials are unsure where the bear came from.

The black bear weighed approximately 250 pounds. The bear was transported to California Valley to be released.
