SANTA PAULA, Calif. -

Ventura County Fire and additional crews are battling a two-alarm, 25 acre brush fire near Santa Paula that shut down a major highway.

Crews appeared to be getting a handle on the blaze by 2:30 p.m. and cancelled the call for air support.

Scanner traffic between emergency responders describes damage to irrigation systems.

The flames broke out about 1:10 p.m. Wednesday afternoon in a grove of eucalyptus trees off the eastbound side of Highway 126 near Briggs Road and quickly spread toward nearby farms and agricultural structures.

Within minutes, the "Briggs" fire jumped the south side of the freeway.

Highway 126 is closed in both directions between Peck Rd. and Wells Rd. Motorists can expect additional closures in surrounding areas.

Westbound Highway 126 at Briggs is also closed, and the Calfornia Highway Patrol website describes wires down along Briggs.
