SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

June is National Cat Adoption Month but while many people are taking the pledge to add a new member to their family, it's currently not enough to make a difference in Santa Barbara County.

Local shelters are bursting at the seams with this month also being a very busy time with more kittens coming in.

So, there are two ways you can help shelters so they do not have to turn away any cats:  adopt or become a foster parent.

Gina Sunseri, Senior Fire Investigator from the Santa Barbara City Fire Department, makes time in a very busy schedule to not only own an adult cat but also foster a trio of kittens from the shelter.

"It keeps them from growing up in a shelter or a cage, or in the wild where their survival rate is less than 50%," Sunseri said.  "And fostering kittens in a home creates really happy healthy social kittens that people want to adopt."

This Saturday, June 27, there will be an adoption day at Ark Pet and Supply in Carpinteria.  All kittens are normally $75 but will be 2 for 1 at the event.  The kittens have been spayed, neutered, and have all vaccinations.

Animal Shelter Assistance Program (ASAP) is a volunteer-based, non-profit organization that takes care of the cats and kittens at the Santa Barbara County Animal Shelter. ASAP provides humane care for these animals and works to eliminate the practice of euthanizing them for reasons other than serious health or behavior problems.
