The Santa Maria Bonita School District Board broke ground this morning on a new elementary school.
The school will be at the corner of Biscayne Street and Sonya Lane on the west side of the city and it will cost a little more than $16 million to build.
The district received a $9.5 million grant from the state to help fund the project. In all, it will be home to more than 650 students.
One of the goals is to help with school overcrowding. "All of our schools are rather large, which is again, a huge impact on the school facilities. from parking to bathrooms to play space to libraries, computer labs," said District Superintendent Phil Alvarado.
Construction is expected to begin immediately and the school should open its doors to students in the fall of 2015.
