A teenager accused of assaulting a UCSB police officer by hitting him with a backpack full of liquor bottles appeared in court for arraignment.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

The teenager accused of assaulting a University of California Santa Barbara police officer during Deltopia pleaded not guilty Monday.

Desmond Louis Edwards, 17, stood by his attorney and faced a judge. He's accused of hitting an officer with a backpack that had a least one liquor bottle inside. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department says the UCSB officer required 20 stitches and Edwards' subsequent arrest led to the civil unrest in Isla Vista on April 5.

The Los Angeles teen faces three felony counts: mayhem, resisting executive officer and assault on a police officer. There is also a special allegation of causing great bodily injury. Edwards pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Judge Thomas Adams reduced Edwards' bail from $100,000 to $75,000. He remains in custody at the juvenile facility in Santa Maria. His next court appearance will be April 28 for a preliminary hearing.
