DMV Moves to Regulate Self-Driving Cars

VENTURA, Calif. -

Representatives from the California Department of Motor Vehicles and several car companies came together on Tuesday to try to develop regulations for autonomous vehicles.

The DMV defines an autonomous vehicle as a car that can drive itself without the physical control or monitoring by a human operator.  Right now autonomous vehicles are just in the testing phase, and they must be accompanied by a human that can take over if necessary.

A car that completely drives itself may seem years away, but we really are much closer than many may think.  Some cars now on our local car lots can warn you if someone is in your blind spot, or even help you parallel park.  The Jeep Cherokee is one of those cars.  It can parallel and perpendicular park all with just the push of a button.

”The safety features are pretty outstanding; these cars are really getting close to driving themselves.  I don’t know if that is a good thing, it takes all the fun out of it,” said Bob Crown, the owner of Crown Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram in Ventura.

The DMV is planning to have regulations regarding the public operation of self-driving cars completed by January 1, 2015.
