Highway 1 near Jalama Road reopened just after noon Thursday following a fatal accident that shut down the highway in both directions for five hours, and took the life of a Lompoc woman.
The accident was reported just before 7 a.m. after an SUV and a sedan collided head-on, trapping at least one person.
The California Highway Patrol confirms 29-year-old Mirella Hernandez died after the Honda Civic she was driving, veered across the double yellow lines and into the oncoming Chrysler PT Cruiser.
The driver of the SUV, 25-year-old Karla Santos-Lomeli and her passenger, 18-year-old Ricky Santos-Lomeli, both suffered a broken leg and other major injuries. The two were taken to Cottage Hospital.
Investigators say both drivers and the one passenger are all from Lompoc and all were wearing their seat belts.
The CHP collision report indicates light rain was falling at the time of the accident, although it is unclear if that was a factor.
