The search may be over but the wait continues for the return of a man swept out to sea at Guadalupe Dunes beach.
The unpredictable waters off Guadalupe Dunes beach are now the place of worship for family, friends and fellow churchgoers of 43 year Benito Flores.
The Santa Maria man was swept out to sea by a huge wave during a church baptism service in the water at the beach last Sunday.
Authorities officially called off the search and rescue mission for Flores on Monday.
"Because we are looking for the body of our brother", says Gustina Flores who was part of the larger group keeping vigil at the beach parking lot.
The beach at Guadalupe Dunes has seen its share of tragedies over the years.
Warning signs of treacherous currents in the water are posted at the beach parking lot.
Many visitors stick to walking along the active shoreline and locals come for the surf-fishing.
In the meantime, family and friends of Benito Flores wait, watch and hope.
"Because we want to find something", Gustina Flores says.
