Neighbors said they knew the man who was shot twice in the head near a children's playground in Bolker's Park, but Port Hueneme police have not identified him.
Neighbors called 911 after seeing a fight brewing and then hearing gunshots.
Most were afraid to talk about the case.
Police said the 20-year-old was nearly killed around 4 p.m., Wednesday.
He is now on life support.
Someone reported seeing a gray station wagon heading to Hemlock Street right after the shooting.
Officers are asking anyone with information to call Port Hueneme police Detective Norma Starna at 805-986-6642
