One Hiker Killed, Another Rescued At Cold Springs Trail

Sunday hike left couple injured, young men went for help and fell to his death

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

A couple hiking along lower Cold Springs discovered a young man's body Monday morning.  About five hours later another group of hikers found his female companion injured at the bottom of the trial.

Sheriff's investigators said the young man and injured woman had been hiking together for about 45 minutes near Tangerine Falls Sunday afternoon when they both got injured.  She had broken a write and both ankles, he had a serious arm injury.  Despite his injury, he decided to hike to get help and ended up falling 20-30 feet down a rocky ledge. 

Search and Rescue crew members,  Sheriff's deputies and members of the Montecito and county fire departments helped with the all recovery and rescue effort.

The women was airlifted to Cottage Hospital.  Investigators said they would not release the name of her male companion until his family is notified.
