People hitting the road early for Memorial Day weekend road trips had to use their windshield wipers along the coast.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

People hitting the road early for Memorial Day weekend road trips had to use their windshield wipers along the coast.

The AAA auto club predicts a record number of people will travel by plane, train and automobile this holiday weekend.

An estimated 36.1 million people are expected to drive at least 50 miles between Thursday and Monday.

Another four million are likely to reach their destination by by plane or train.

Hotel workers said they are already booked. The Lavender Inn in Santa Barbara expected to flash a "no vacancy" sign by Friday.

Prices at the pumps are above four dollars a gallon in California, but prices are about the same as this time last year.

California Highway Patrol officers said they will be taking part in a maximum enforcement period to keep drunk drivers and distracted drivers off the road.

Memorial Day is a time to remember men and women who have served their county in the armed forces.  It is also considered the kick-off of the summer travel season.
