Family not at home when fire broke out

OCEANO, Calif. -

The Red Cross is helping put a roof over one family's head displaced by a house fire.

Five Cities Fire put out the flames at the home located at 331 McCarthy Avenue in Oceano Wednesday afternoon.

Fortunately a woman and her daughter were not at home at the time of the blaze. The homeowner did mention she had just redecorated the house and had put up Christmas ornaments earlier in the day.

Officials said the fire was contained to the upstairs of the house. The firefighters ventilated the roof from above with hand tools and power saws.

Nearby residents had to evacuate for their safety. No one was hurt.
