Nearly 600 people up and down the coast have a big reason to smile. They got to visit the dentist for free thanks to Johnson Family Dental.
Johnson Family Dental hosted its 10th Annual 'Dentistry of Love' event. The business opened its offices in Santa Barbara, Ventura and Solvang for one day. It took dozens of dentists, hygienists and volunteers to pull it off.
It was first come, first serve to get free dental services including cleanings, extractions and fillings. "It's the one day where a patient, they don't care if they wait 5, 6 or 10 hours to get in here. They just want to have it done and it makes us feel good and it makes them feel good," said Steve Johnson, DDS.
Many of the people who stood hours in line don't have health or dental insurance and hadn't seen a dentist in a long time, if ever. "I have never had a cleaning and I've only been to the dentist once in the last 13 years," said Joanna Benedict of Santa Barbara.
The average treatment for those who saw a dentist during the event ranged from 250 dollars to 350 dollars. People who didn't get to see a dentist got a voucher for a future visit. Johnson Family Dental says everyone is invited in for a free exam any time.
Any donations made at the event will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The JDRF is a organization dedicated to finding a cure for Type 1 Diabetes through the funding of research.
