Local Sonar Specialist Explains Underwater Search Technology

A Denmark company, with an office in Goleta, is known for technology used underwater.
James Coleman of Teledyne Reson demonstrated some of the technology in the Santa Barbara Harbor on Tuesday.
Coleman said a hydrophone can listen underwater. He said it is like an underwater microphone that can hear pinging up to 5 miles away.
Sonar devices are also an option. They can pick up sound bouncing off the sea floor to create 3-D images.
Sonar on ships can be used to map the ocean. But Coleman said the depth won't make it quick or easy.
