Lompoc Fire Closer to Getting Safety Emergency Trailer

For the past year the Lompoc Firefighters Foundation has been raising money to buy a $110,000 fire safety emergency trailer.
"From a public education perspective this trailer gives us the ability to train on several scenarios", says Lompoc Fire Dept. Chief Kurt Lapitow, "its state of the art technology where we can actually bring people in and teach them how to use fire extinguishers without having to set a fire, or the usual complaints we get when we do live fire training."
Thanks to a $55,000 matching grant from the Chumash Tribal Foundation and a $20,000 pledge from the Lompoc Rotary Club, the Firefighters Foundation is closing in on getting enough money to buy the trailer.
The new fire emergency trailer is expected to help the Lompoc Fire Department extend its community outreach programs as well as the training of its own firefighters
"It is a very strong tool for us to take into the community, because of the portability", Chief Lapitow says, "its got a mock up of a bedroom on the rear of the trailer, so we'll be able to reinforce lessons for our children and young adults as to when you are asleep at night, what to do in case you think there is a fire in your home... we can actually introduce smoke up underneath the door, heat the door up so it will be very realistic."
The Firefighters Foundation is about $15,000 short from reaching the fundraising goal to buy the fire safety trailer.
Two big fundraising events are coming up that could help the Foundation reach its goal.
The annual Rotary Wine Tasting and Auction is on February 23 and the 9th Annual Fire and Ice Ball is on March 1.
