SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

September 16 is considered Mexico's most important patriotic holiday.

Students at La Cumbre Junior High kicked off the Celebrando el..Grito De Independencia De Mexico after school Friday.

Joined by a guest from the Mexican consulate in Oxnard, the students rang a symbolic church bell like the one that called on people to rise up against the Spanish Crown in 1810.

Independence took another  11 years.

Rep. Lois Capps wore a Mexican dress to the event. Capps thanked the school principal for allowing many of the school children too learn history and feel connected to their heritage and traditions.
