A wild night in Isla Vista ended with one man being stabbed and a group of partiers being pepper-sprayed.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office said a mob turned on them Saturday as they tried to arrest someone after deputies caught a man who allegedly stabbed a 20-year-old Rhode Island man in the stomach.
"Let him go! Let him go! Let him go!" chanted a large group of people. The images were caught on cellphone video. Those words quickly turned into something else.
"(It was) very much a mob mentality. They were almost one. Speaking as one, acting as one. Pressing in around the officers as one. And a lot of bottles and cans being thrown," said Lt. Rob Plastino with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office.
"(Expletive) the police! (Expletive) the police!" said the crowd.
Before the group of thousands got out of hand, deputies were trying to arrest Otis Dezjuan Washington, 20, on charges of vehicle tampering and resisting arrest. He was jumping and dancing on cars.
"And the cops tried to grab him and he ran and all the cops tried to run after him. It started a huge riot and everyone kept saying, 'Free him. Let him go, let him go.' People were throwing water bottles at the cops," said witness Tyler McQuillin.
That's when things took a turn.
"As the deputies and officers started feeling that their lives were at stake or they are feeling that they are being threatened, different tools can be used," said Plastino.
Those tools include verbal commands.
"Immediatly disperse the area," said an unidentified University police officer on Saturday night.
Other tools are nonlethal weapons like pepper spray and batons.
"The police were responding to a riot outbreak of uprising citizens of Isla Vista," said Justin Picariell, a Santa Barbara resident in Isla Vista at the time.
In the light of day and back to school after the rowdy weekend, some students blame the chaos on partying.
"I think, honestly, it's just a bunch of stupid, drunk college kids," said Ryan Lowe, a freshman UCSB student.
"This was outside the norm and I have to say I'm very disappointed in the community," said Plastino.
Although many of the partiers were causing a big problem, Plastino said a few good Samaritans helped push back the crowd until deputies from surrounding areas could make it to Isla Vista.
The man stabbed remains at Cottage Hospital and is in stable condition. Kuriyan Summers-Dickinson, 20, attempted to run away but was arrested shortly after the stabbing and is charged with attempted murder.
