Montecito residents are being told to cut back on their water use immediately. The situation there is dire and there are no easy solutions during the drought.

Water customers of the Montecito Water District are now under a mandatory reduction of 30% due to the ongoing drought.

District officials believe without the measures, water supplies could run out by July, assuming drought conditions continue.

Residents packed a meeting this afternoon that spilled over into a hallway.  Many told the District they were already conserving and that the issue was those who own large tracts of land, yet still use large amount of water to irrigate the landscaping.

The Water District's attorney told the group there are plans to levy penalties and fines against those who were using larger amounts of water, and not making efforts to conserve.
