Change saves homeless center money

A board member has volunteered to run Casa Eperanza homeless center in Santa Barbara without drawing a paycheck. Director Michael Foley is no longer in charge. The change will save the shelter more than $130,000 a year.

Volunteers are likely to play a bigger role. Board member Juliana Minsky said staffing changes are meant to achieve a sustainable program and financial model.
MInseky said, "Recent layoffs are part of a number of factors and measures we have addressed so that we will be able to meet the much reduced budget, and further unexpected funding gaps,  by end of Casa's fiscal year June 30." She said the board is grateful to Bob Bogle, a member of our board of directors who is stepping in as interim administrative manager.

Casa provided more than 1,000 men, women and families with 24-hour sobriety-based shelter, recovery services, housing and job development, meals and health care in 2013.
Case Esperanza is on the road to breaking even this year.
But more donations are needed to move homeless people into permanent housing.
Donations to Casa Esperanza may be sent to P.O. Box 24116, Santa Barbara, CA 93121 or online at
