SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

Cinco de Mayo celebrations have become synonymous with drinking. Some events are even called Drinko de Mayo and Cinco de Wino.

California Highway Patrol are among a dozen agencies in California with extra officers patrolling the road.

CHP officer Jonathan Gutierrez said they are prepared for the worst.

Statistics in recent years show Cinco de Mayo crashes are on the rise.

They are urging people to have a designated driver with them or someone to call.

Officers said taxis, Uber and other ride services are a lot cheaper than the cost of a DUI that could end a life.
