Victim in Crash Near Vandenberg AFB Identified

NEAR VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -

The California Highway Patrol has identified the driver killed in Thursday night's crash near Vandenberg Air Force Base as 53-year-old Robert Brown of Lompoc.

According to the CHP, the crash happened at Highway 1 and Highway 135 just before 9:00 p.m.  A big rig with heavy equipment on board was headed up a hill at a speed between 35 and 40 miles per hour.

Brown, who was driving a Mercedes, came around the corner at an unknown speed and drove underneath the truck.  He died at the scene from his injuries.

The big rig driver, identified as Rosendo Velasquez of Lompoc, was not hurt.  He told investigators he had conducted a safety inspection of his truck just 30 minutes before the accident happened.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but alcohol has not been ruled out as a factor.
