PISMO BEACH, Calif. -

Time is running out to preserve 900 acres of open space in the hills above Pismo Beach.

A grassroots campaign to create the "Pismo Beach Preserve" has enlisted the efforts of local high school students.

Students at the Nu-Tech School on the campus of Nipomo High School helped produce a Public Service Announcement about the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County's effort to buy 900 acres of land in the Pismo foothills to preserve as open space.

"This is a once in a generation opportunity", says Herb Kandel with the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County, "it's the most exciting conservation deal that I have been involved with."

Kandel says the non-profit group Land Conservancy is in the home stretch of its fundraising to complete a deal with the landowner who is willing to sell the 900 acres for $12 million.

Most of the money will come from various state funding.

San Luis Obispo County has been asked to put in more than one million dollars.

The remaining amount needs to come from fundraising efforts before a July 1 deadline.

"Our real piece is the community piece which is $750,000 remaining", Kandel says, "we have half of that, so to close that gap on the community will be the most important next step."

The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County will be holding a "Pismo Preserve" fundraising concert in the park at Dinosaur Caves Park in Shell Beach from Noon to 5pm this Sunday afternoon.

The public and donations for the cause are welcome.
