Pilot dies after plane crashes near chemical plant

Plane crash in SLO

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -

A twin-engine plane crashed in San Luis Obispo after take off on Monday afternoon killing the pilot.

San Luis Obispo County regional hazardous materials assessed the building where the plane crashed, but there were no chemical leaks, said San Luis Obispo Fire Chief Charlie Hines.

The Cessna 337 Skymaster clipped a chemical plant in San Luis Obispo, about 1.5 miles from the airport. No one in the building was injured.

The crash happened around 1:15 p.m. near Granada Drive and South Higuera.  Officials on scene say the twin-engine plane hit a FedEx truck before hitting the building. The delivery truck driver was uninjured.

Cal Fire confirms that the pilot died in the crash.

The San Luis Obispo airport air traffic control tower had visual and radio contact with the pilot. He reported difficulties after take off, said Richard Howell, the airport general manager.

San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department has confirmed that the building hit by the plane was evacuated.  The building stores hazardous materials.

City fire, and county fire along with police are on scene.

A Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board team is on the way to San Luis Obispo to investigate the crash.
