Plastic bag ban bill

California senators held a press conference on Friday to discuss the statewide ban on plastic bags.

The bill would ban all plastic bags at supermarkets by July 2015. Smaller stores would be forced to do the same the following year.

"I think it's a great idea. They do it in Europe all the time. They have bags at the checkout counter and if you want one you have to pay for it," said Santa Barbara native Michael Ingham.

The new bill would charge costumers 10 cents per bag. The other option is to buy reusable bags for a one-time fee.

Los Angeles and nearly 100 cities and counties in the state have enacted bans on single-use plastic bags.
