SANTA PAULA, Calif. -

Santa Paula police officers are investigating a suspicious death.

Police said a woman's fully-clothed body was found just after 10 a.m. near an agricultural field. The body was discovered by  farm workers plowing the field and laying irrigation pipe.

One worker spotted the woman's body in a ditch and called for help.

Police officers and Ventura County sheriff's deputies cordoned off the area on the 1000 block of Todd Lane near Faulkner Road,  just south of the 126 Freeway.

Police said they could only describe the woman as Hispanic.

The Ventura County medical examiner was not ready to release her identity or cause of death as of Wednesday night.

Santa Paula police said the farmland was recently annexed by the city, therefore they will be in charge of the investigation if it turns out to be a homicide.
