A faulty underground electrical vault in Santa Barbara's downtown business zone has caused problems for over 24 hours.
It blew Tuesday just before 6 p.m.
By late afternoon today, 44 customers were still in the dark. Southern California Edison repair crews have spent over 24 hours working on the problem with specialized equipment.
No one was hurt in the vault incident, but fire and police personnel were called out.
Four local elevators stopped, trapping those inside.
Gary Pitney with the Santa Barbara City Fire Department said crews has just completed an updated elevator rescue class.
"We had an elevator expert come in, and we went through multiple elevators downtown because there's different construction and different ways of rescuing people and we like to do it without damaging elevators if we can. So there's some techniques involved," said Pitney.
One of the elevators was at the Ralph's Supermarket three blocks away. Others were at the Paseo Nuevo Mall.
