San Miguel Island Closed To Public
Updated On: Apr 22 2014 11:35:23 AM CDT
San Miguel Island just off our coast, is off-limits right now. The navy is concerned the island may have unexploded military ordnance on it.
That is a major concern, because the national park service wants to make more areas of the island accessible to the public for hiking and overnight camping. The navy used the island as a bombing test range from world war two until the 1970's.
Naval officials have not given a timeline to reopen the island to the public. For more information regarding Naval Base Ventura County, please call the NBVC public affairs office at 805-989-9234.
