It's the place 12-year-old Pablo Hammack feels most at home.
"My dad just took me to the gym and then after that, I just noticed I wanted to do more of it and wanted to get hooked after that," Pablo said.
Rock climbing is a hobby Pablo's been improving at over the last 2 years. His hard work landed him a spot to compete in the USA Climbing National Championships next month in Colorado Springs.
"Just going to just go out, just have fun and hopefully get a good score," Pablo said.
While having fun is a key ingredient to his accomplishments, Pablo's climbing team coach Michael O'Connor at Santa Barbara Rock Gym said his hard work combined with his talent is what makes him stronger every day.
"He's climbing grades that you won't see more than a handful of kids climbing at this age," O'Connor said. "And right off the bat you can see he's that much better."
Pablo said what goes into making a good rock climber is a combination of core strength, upper body strength, good technique, and determination.
Pablo added the best factor in his success comes from his #1 fans: his proud parents.
"He has so much time in his life to carve out his own path," said his mother, Danielle. "We just support him in whatever he chooses."
Pablo said he also encourages any child with a goal and dream to simply "reach" for the stars.
"Just go for it," Pablo said. "Just climb. Just climbing itself gets your stronger and just keep at it."
