The Santa Barbara City Fire Department came together Friday to support one of their own who's battling cancer.

Kevin Corbett, an eight-year veteran of the department, is going through chemotherapy. He has lost his hair and is off the job while going through treatment.

"He was my firefighter for many years," Capt. Kevin Bryant said. "He's my good friend and I love him dearly."

Bryant channeled that love into a show of support. Bryant organized a haircut and blood drive in Kevin's name. Firefighters throughout the city gathered at Station No. 1 to get their heads shaved and some to donate blood.

"We're just here showing our support for him," said firefighter Tyler Smith. "Taking care of a brother."

The Fire Department said they're a family and will always be looking out for their men and women. That caring attitude was obvious when the mobile blood unit from United Blood Services had to turn people away because they were at capacity.

"Kevin had to have a couple units of blood when he was hospitalized early on, Bryant said. "So we thought that we would replenish the blood that Kevin used and also give the gift of life to others that need blood."

In addition to the blood drive haircuts to match Corbett, a community poker tournament raised $15,000 for him and his family to help pay for medical expenses.

If you would like to donate blood to benefit local blood banks the Santa Barbara Fire Department is directing people to United Blood Services at 4213 State St, Santa Barbara, Calif., 93110. And you can donate in Kevin Corbett's name.
