SANTA PAULA, Calif. -

Ventura County sheriff's officials said a body has been found in rough terrain in a popular hiking area of Los Padres National Forest.

Investigators flew out to the scene by helicopter Thursday morning to retrieve the body and examine the scene.

Sheriff officials said the body was discovered Wednesday evening near the Punch Bowl section of Santa Paula Canyon.

Deputies said the gender of the body was not immediately known, and it is unclear whether the person died as a result of a hiking accident or a homicide.
